Have you ever vacationed to Disney World and thought “gee this is so magical I wish I could live here!” Well, have I got a story for you! I, AJ Norris, am going to LIVE ON DISNEY PROPERTY for FOUR MONTHS! Just how am I going to do it you ask? With a little thing called the Disney College Program!
What is the Disney College Program?
The Disney College Program website describes it as, “a truly unique program that allows participants to network with leaders, take part in personal and career development classes, and build transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, guest service, and effective communication.”
I think it’s more like: Instead of studying abroad I’m going to
play in the Magic Kingdom for free! work for Disney for a semester!
The Application Process
To get accepted into the program you have to go through three stages: the online application, the web-based interview, and the phone interview. For the online application it was more or less like a regular job application, except toward the end you get to rank the jobs you would like to have if you get accepted. The web-based interview was the easiest part in my opinion; it’s more or less a personality test asking you questions like “I am always on time to work” and then you answer on a scale of “most like me” to “least like me.” The phone interview was last and the most nerve-racking experience of my life! A Disney recruiter will call your phone and will have a 12 to a 30-minute conversation about different roles, roommate tolerance, why you want to be in the program, and other questions I had no good answer for.
My role is going to be quick service food and beverage, so basically Disney fast food. OK so I’m not going to be a princess or giving makeovers to little girls inside the castle, but I’m excited none the less! I think this job is going difficult and trying, but attitude is half the battle, so I’m going into it with a positive attitude! Plus working for Disney is an AH-MA-ZING resume builder.
Why I’m Excited for the Program
I love Disney! While I’m not really into the movies or characters, I love Disney parks. The history of how they came to be, the stories behind the creation of the rides, how they create that magical feeling inside the “Disney bubble” all of that is so cool to me! Now I get a behind the scenes look into how they do it all! Besides me being a Disney nerd, I’m pumped to meet new people and make life long friends! People have said they’ve met their husbands while on their program, so fingers crossed (just kidding)! More than all of this, I am excited to see how God is going to use me in a place like Disney World! Disney has so many guests and cast members from all over the world and all walks of life, and I have been praying to be the hands and feet of Jesus while I’m there!
I’m so excited to share more about my program here on the blog! I can’t wait to find out my location, who my roommates will be, and so much more! I’ll keep you posted! Follow me on Disney Instagram for more Disney content! (@pixiedustedprep). Keep seeking sunshine!
Update January 2019: I decided to pass up this opportunity and stay at OU for the fall semester. I still stand by what I wrote above, and I will reapply for the program in the future!
